Week of February 6th

Saying Good Bye to Ms. Anugrah.
Sadly, she has returned to India.  We had a wonderful time learning about her country and her culture.

This week in Language Arts...
We will focus on tackling more complex non fiction texts.  We will practice two strategies: Previewing texts, and inferring main idea statements.

This week in Science:  We will wrap up our Living Systems Unit.  Students will turn in radish seed lab reports, and experiment with erosion.

IXL:  Context Clue Practice:  VV. 3, VV4.

This Week in Language Arts....

We will continue our study of non fiction texts.  Our focus will be identifying text structures and growing our own theories around the information that non fiction authors share.

IXL practice in class will be Cause and Effect (FF1)  and using context clues to find the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary  (VVI VV2) students can practice at home.

This week in Science....

We will look at how salt impacts plant growth by sprouting radish seed.  We will also evaluate how plants help prevent erosion.

Last Thursday the Edlund homeroom Conducted our second Mystery Skype with a sixth grade class from Ohio.

Character Book Club Projects

Students are finishing up their book club texts.  They should aim to be finished with their books by the end of this coming weekend.

As they finish, they are working on projects that demonstrate their understanding of the comprehension skills we have been focusing on.  Please see the link below to see the assignment.  Students can work on their projects during class time this week and next, and during WIN time.

Students may choose to finish part of the project at home.  If this is the case, I recommend that he/she work on the summary of the text at home first.

Mystery Skype

We successfully had our first Mystery Skype Session yesterday.  The teamwork was incredible!  We figured out that the other class was in Bend, Oregon in under ten questions.  The whole session when much faster than we thought it would.  We'll plan another round around Thanksgiving.
